The American Heart Association (AHA) defines Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as an algorithmic series of medical procedures and techniques designed for the urgent treatment of cardiac arrest, stroke and similar life-threatening cardiac emergencies. ACLS expands upon basic life support with more advanced skills such as defibrillation, IV use, intubation, and ECG analysis. Many hospitals and other medical facilities require this advanced training for anyone who may be working with cardiac patients.
Participants in ACLS will learn to:
• Recognize and manage peri-arrest conditions and cardiac arrest scenarios
• Apply ACLS algorithms for cardiac emergencies, including ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes
• Perform effective basic and advanced life support interventions, integrating airway management, pharmacology, and defibrillation
• Work efficiently in resuscitation teams, including leadership and communication skills during emergencies
• Respond to other life-threatening conditions, such as stroke, and provide immediate post-cardiac arrest care
Pre-course Requirement: Review, understand, and complete the ECG and Pharmacology pre-course assessment tests online at ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment
Required AHA books must be obtained before class and brought to class; books are available for advance purchase through the NWTC Bookstore.
