The course is intended to provide a basic understanding of the theory and practice of proactive policing strategies and approaches which identify and assist in preventing causes of crime. At the conclusion of the course students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the origins and practice of crime prevention programming as well as a rudimentary understanding of watch programs, personal safety, security devices, analysis of crime, methods of home and business security and the liability exposure relative to security.

A basic crime prevention course is required for many of the state and national certifications as a Crime Prevention Specialist.

Topics to be addressed: • History of pro-active policing and prevention • Understanding the premise behind various prevention programs • Overview of specific crime prevention programs • Introduction to Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design • Overview of security hardware and methods employed to defeat them • The importance of Crime Analysis in prevention • Laws as prevention tools • Premises liability relevance to crime prevention practitioners
