Session 3: Open Records/Open Sources: Tools for Research & Investigations -12 HRS / 6 weeks

In this course learners will explore the open records process, public records, databases, websites, census, Department of Corrections (DOC), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), laws, land records, scene reviews, that can aid in missing persons, locating skips, tracking down witnesses, conducting backgrounds, and due diligence heir locates. Learners will gain knowledge about what can be gathered through open records, the time frames for certain requests and the process. This course will explore the purpose of Desktop Investigative tools, and resources such as Libraries, DNA databases, Social media, reverse image search, family, neighborhood interviews, and the Consolidated Court Automation Program (CCAP).

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn what OSINT is (Open-Source Intelligence) and what kind of information is available on the internet.
  • Examine general practices for FOIA (Freedom of Information Acta) and open records requests.
  • Identify specific information sources and how they can be helpful in an investigation.
  • Apply knowledge of open sources and other information sources to conduct a background investigation.
  • Complete a reverse image search utilizing internet search engines.
  • Understand desktop investigation tools and how they can be used.
  • Complete a desktop investigation of a specified location
